COMMITMENT TO CREATE NATIONAL AWARENESS OF THE BENEFITS OF TRADEMARKS

The Senate passed on July 18, 2018, S. Res. 580 formally recognizing and supporting public awareness of the importance of trademarks to businesses, consumers, and to combat counterfeiters.

Whereas….

  •  “…intellectual property is instrumental to the economy of the United States by fueling innovation and creating jobs…”

  •  “…assists the public in discerning between authentic and counterfeit merchandise; and stopping the flow of counterfeit goods”

  • “…increase awareness of, and foster productive public dialogue about, the importance of trademarks and the risks associated with counterfeit goods”.

Resolved that…

  • “there should be a greater public awareness of the importance of trademarks for the society and economy of the United States“…educate the people of the United States about trademarks encourage….

  • Corporations, small business, governmental agencies and nonprofit organizations to share information with the public about trademarks”

It is my commitment to this end begins in academia.  There is a virtually no, nonvirtual trademark courses in paralegal programs.  Even if intellectual property courses are available, only a few weeks are devoted to each of the areas of intellectual property.  When a paralegal starts working, there is no prior training.

Law schools have been increasing intellectual property concentrations and clinics at a fast rate and that is a positive development that unfortunately, is not paralleled in paralegal programs.

I am committed to ending ignorance of intellectual property.  I am direct marketing colleges, universities, and law schools about the importance of trademarks.  Further I am volunteering to speak at businesses, paralegal associations, academia, and public libraries.
